How Blue Flag helps in conservation of Indian beaches

The international Blue Flag programme of the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) promotes sustainable development in coastal and marine areas. It challenges local authorities and beach operators to achieve high standards in the four categories of: water quality, environmental management, environmental education and safety. Over the years, the Blue Flag has become a highly respected and recognised award working to bring together the tourism and environmental sectors at local, regional and national levels.

SSUD as the National Operator agency of Blue Flag India is promoting sustainable management of beaches and supporting coastal local governments and communities to make use of Blue Flag to improve their own local environment.

Waste Management and beach cleaning are important components of the programme. The award process motivates authorities, managers and citizens to work towards achieving environmental quality, cleanliness and safety of beaches and marinas and thereby contributes to the growth of responsible tourism and sustainable development of coastal areas and local community.
